Synthesizing the Literature

To synthesize is to combine. In research, researchers combine the ideas and findings of multiple literature sources. The goal is not to summarize each source but to combine or synthesize the main ideas in multiple pieces of information to create a theme—a new idea or a new way of thinking about the topic.
